Professor Van Nortwick explores the ways in which the authors of the Gilgamesh epic, the Iliad, and the Aeneid use the relationship between the male hero and his `second self,' or alter ego, objectified in one or more characters in the story, to explore the psychological, or spiritual, evolution of the hero.
