Overview of the Sociolinguistic Context of the Dongxiang Language

Dongxiang Mongolian is spoken in Southern Gansu, China. The community of speakers is in a state of unconscious diglossia where a hierarchy of languages exists, but no general feeling of linguistic insecurity. This is reflected in their language, where a specific morphology has been developed to integrate lexical and grammatical borrowings.
