Originally published in 1938, this book was formed from the content of the Prince Consort Prize Essay for 1934. Covering various aspects of the Dissenter movement between 1763 and 1800, it was 'designed partly as a study of a phase in the history of English opinion in the eighteenth century, and partly as an essay upon the evolution of certain political ideas in England.'
