Samenvatting

This book has a simple aim: to introduce Shakespeare to the ordinary reader, the student, or the teacher, in a concise and readily accessible fashion. Although there are few incontrovertible facts regarding the man Shakespeare, much can be said about the plays attributed to him, and it is towards an understanding of Shakespeare as a popular dramatist that this book is intended. Dividing his study into two parts, Professor E. F. C. Ludowyk first describes the Elizabethan context in which Shakespeare's plays were created and then considers a representative sampling of six of his works.
