This is a comprehensive account of British economic policy since 1900, covering both macro and micro issues and making full use of recent research, drawing on documents made available under the 30-year rule which reveal the formulation of policy through the 1950s.

Broadly chronological in its approach, it offers both a coherent analysis and a clear narrative description of policy-making through the century. It is structured in such a way as to give due weight to the various influences on policy: institutional aspects (such as the changing role of policy-making ministries), political debate, and economic theory.
